Environment

Animal farming is a more significant contributor to global warming than all forms of transport combined (including flying)!  Methane produced by domestic livestock is 20 times more effective at trapping heat than Carbon dioxide.

Farming animals for meat is the most inefficient way of producing edible protein.  It is almost 80 times more efficient to feed people on soya rather than cows.

PROTEIN TYPE FOSSIL FUEL CALORIES NEEDED TO PRODUCE 1 CALORIE OF PROTEIN
Beef 78
Pork 35
Chicken 22
Soya 1

In terms of land use, 10 hectares of land can feed two people on beef, 10 people on maize, 24 people on grain or 61 people on soya.

It has been estimated that going vegan saves one acre of forest each year.  Going veggie also helps to reduce water use, famine, habitat loss, soil degradation, desertification, eutrophication, chemical poisoning, air and water pollution… basically the planet is not going to be saved until millions of people give up meat.

More than 90% of soya currently grown for food is fed to livestock – remember this the next time a misinformed omnivore accuses vegetarians of destroying the rainforest for tofu!
